Elizabeth is West Midlands Rowing Champion for third year in succession

Pershore High School student, Elizabeth Shaw (15) from Norton recently took part in the West Midlands Rowing Championships and became West Midlands Champion in her age group (WJ16 this year) for the third year in a row.

Elizabeth and a student from Nunnery Wood High School beat their nearest rivals to win by just under 20 seconds over the 2.5K course. Later in the day they both teamed up with students f...rom Christopher Whitehead Language College and The Chantry School to form a quad, beating their nearest rivals by just under 10 seconds to become champions in this category also, for the second time in three years. The same Worcester Rowing Club crew were beaten into second place last year by only 0.3 of a second. West Midlands Champion five times out of six in three years!

The quad crew will now go on to represent the West Midlands at the British Rowing Inter-Regional Championships in April at the National Watersports Centre, along with over 1000 other junior rowers from all over the UK. They will also compete at the Junior National Championships in July.

Elizabeth’s squad train 7-8 times a week at Worcester Rowing Club which, with revision for GCSEs is a big commitment, but has rewarded them with results plus some great times with a close knit group of friends.

If anyone is interested in taking up rowing there are some great local clubs with strong junior sections based in Evesham, Tewkesbury (AB7), Worcester and Upton upon Severn.
